Oboe.

The oboe is a double reed musical instrument of the woodwind family.
The English word "oboe" is a corruption of the French word for oboe, hautbois, which is a compound word made of haut meaning "high" and bois, meaning "wood".

Careful manipulation of embouchure and air pressure allows the player to express a large timbral and dynamic range.
The oboe is often considered one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play.

In comparison to other modern woodwind instruments,
the oboe has a clear and penetrating voice.
In the play Angels in America,
the oboe has been described as sounding like a duck if the duck were a songbird.

The timbre of the oboe is derived from the oboe's conical bore (as opposed to the generally cylindrical bore of flutes and clarinets).
As a result, oboes are readily audible over other instruments in large ensembles.

Orchestras will usually tune by listening to the oboe play a concert A (usually A440, but sometimes higher if the orchestra tunes to a higher pitch).
Adjusting the pitch of the oboe is achieved by permanently altering the scrape,
removing cane from the reed, or changing the position of the reed in the instrument (although the latter method should only be used as a last resort, because adjusting the position of the reed may cause some notes to warble).
Subtle changes in pitch are also possible by adjusting the embouchure.
The oboe is pitched in concert C and has a mezzo-soprano to soprano range.

The classical period brought an oboe whose bore was gradually narrowed,
and the instrument became outfitted with several keys,
among them were those for the notes D♯, F, and G♯. A key similar to the modern octave key was also added called the "slur key," though it was at first used more like the "flick" keys on the modern German bassoon. Only later did French instrument makers redesign the octave key to be used in the manner of the modern key (i.e. held open for the upper register, closed for the lower).

The narrower bore allowed the higher notes to be more easily played, and composers began to more often utilize the oboe's upper register in their works.

The oboe has several siblings.
The most widely known today is the cor anglais, or English horn, the tenor (or alto) member of the family.
A transposing instrument; it is pitched in F, a perfect fifth lower than the oboe.
The oboe d'amore, the alto (or mezzo-soprano) member of the family, is pitched in A, a minor third lower than the oboe. J.S. Bach made extensive use of both the oboe d'amore as well as the taille and oboe da caccia, Baroque antecedents of the cor anglais.
Even less common is the bass oboe (also called baritone oboe), which sounds one octave lower than the oboe.
Delius and Holst both scored for the instrument.
Similar to the bass oboe is the more powerful heckelphone, which has a wider bore and larger tone than the bass oboe.
Only 165 heckelphones have ever been made, and competent players are hard to find [2]. The least common of all are the musette (also called oboe musette or piccolo oboe), the sopranino member of the family (it is usually pitched in E-flat or F above the oboe), and the contrabass oboe (typically pitched in C, two octaves deeper than the standard oboe).

The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the double reed family that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor registers and occasionally even higher. It is called das Fagott in German, il fagotto in Italian, and le basson in French.

The instrument is known for its distinctive tone color, wide range, variety of character, and agility. Its warm, dark, reedy timbre has often been compared to that of a male baritone voice. Due to the complicated fingering and the problem of reeds, the bassoon is an especially difficult instrument to learn; schoolchildren typically take up the bassoon only after starting on another woodwind instrument, such as the flute, clarinet, or saxophone.

The design of the modern bassoon owes a great deal to the performer, teacher, and composer Carl Almenräder, who, assisted by the German acoustic researcher Gottfried Weber developed the 17-key bassoon whose range spanned four octaves. Almenräder's improvements to the bassoon began with an 1823 treatise in which he described ways of improving intonation, response, and technical ease of playing by means of augmenting and rearranging the keywork; subsequent articles further developed his ideas.

Heckel and two generations of descendants continued to refine the bassoon, and it is their instrument that has become the standard for other instrument makers to follow. Because of their superior singing tone quality (an improvement upon one of the main drawbacks of the Almenräder instruments), the Heckel instruments competed for prominence with the reformed Wiener system, a Boehm-style bassoon, and a completely-keyed instrument devised by C. J. Sax, father of Adolphe Sax.

The modern symphony orchestra typically calls for two bassoons, often with a third playing the contrabassoon. Some works call for four or more players. The first player is frequently called upon to perform solo passages. The bassoon's distinctive tone suits it for both plaintive, lyrical solos such as Ravel's Boléro and more comical ones, such as the grandfather's theme in Peter and the Wolf. Its agility suits it for passages such as the famous running line (doubled in the violas and cellos) in the overture to The Marriage of Figaro. In addition to its solo role, the bassoon is an effective bass to a woodwind choir, a bass line along with the cellos and double basses, and harmonic support along with the French horns.

A wind ensemble will usually also include two bassoons and sometimes contra, each with independent parts; other types of concert wind ensembles will often have larger sections, with many players on each of first or second parts; in simpler arrangements there will be only one bassoon part and no contra. A "no-flick" octave key system is available as an add-on, invented by Arthur Weisberg. Only a few years old, it has yet to be offered as "standard equipment" by any of the major bassoon manufacturers.

While bassoons are usually critically tuned at the factory, the player nonetheless has a great degree of flexibility of pitch control through the use of breath support and embouchure. Players can also use alternate fingerings to adjust the pitch of many notes.

Many extended techniques can be performed on the bassoon, such as multiphonics, flutter tonguing, circular breathing, double tonguing, and harmonics.

Also, using certain fingerings, notes may be produced on the instrument that sound lower pitches than the actual range of the instrument. These "impossible notes" tend to sound very gravelly and out of tune, but technically sound below the low B flat. Alternatively, lower notes can be produced by inserting a small paper or rubber tube into the end of the bell, which converts the lower B flat into a lower note such as an A natural, but this affects the tuning of other notes in the lower register.

Bassoon reeds, made of Arundo donax cane, are often made by the players themselves, although beginner bassoonists tend to buy their reeds from professional reed makers.

The piccolo oboe is the smallest and highest pitched member of the oboe family. Pitched in E-flat or F above the regular oboe (which is a C instrument), the piccolo oboe is a sopranino version of the oboe, comparable to the E-flat clarinet.

Back, at last.
Band camp was neither as tedious nor hectic as I expected it to be.
Well, at least I survived it, didn't I? :D
Despite that those late night practices were lip tearing.
Fingers had to run like nobody's business.
Lips couldn't take it and bleed like shit.
Mouth were practically going numb.
I believe our effort will pay off.
Heh, we gonna rock the stage on 17th July, Presentation Night.
These hardship we're going through will be proved worthwhile.

Yesterday night was the junior band's solo performance.
Some did better than what was expected of them,
some were pretty alright,
some simply, screwed it up.
Section trainers were so affected by the junior's performance,
for that we've been teaching them from scratch for the past 5 months.
Some were joyous, yet some shedded tears.
I was hugging Mabel when she was tearing uncontrollably.
The disappointment she had was unexplainable.
She was helpless.
No one can help her section, except herself.

Seeing her reaction last night, it got me really motivated.
Somehow, being a section leader made me grow as I learn.
Heavier burden and more responsibilities for me to bear.
Not forgetting I have a junior that never fails to make my vessel burst.
But I know I have to love him, regardless of what it takes,
for that he is the one and only hope I have now.
I'll be stepping down next year, and it's merely a few months away.
By that time, he'll only be Sec2.
Many many things he'd need to work very hard on,
he needs to be sensible enough to be the pillar of support for our section.

Tingrui, work hard please.

ok i shall update on the tutor.
i mean the bassoon tutor
the tutor is super funny la.
keep changing the tutorial time,
n keep changing the transport she wan to take to sch.

let mi see, morning sec1s n 2s band. pye pls, dun so blur next time. band prac neva starts @ 10 unless gt special event. rmb to pay $0.50. miranda, try yr best to come 15 mins earlier to set up yr instrument n the room. dun always come slightly after 9. always give mi heart attack.

as usual, mr tan conducted us. do some rythm exercises. he sing some rythm then we guess. i realised, our jurs de rythum quite weak... 1quaver2semiquavers can tell mi thriplets, that's pye. miranda, 1quaver rest 1quaver beat can tell mi crotchet. worse still, i murmured the ans to her b4 mr tan ask her, sigh...

then, mr tan fly off to malaysia. cs conducts us. played gently touch the sky. miranda muz count! nt sure about pye. xp then la fiesta brava.miranda muz prac hor, this piece is slightly difficult. tt's the end of sec1s n 2s band!

u say u like band, u like bassoon. when we ask why u dun come for band n sectionals, u say v sianzz... if u like sth, will u feel sianzz about tt?? it is yr attitude tt is sianzz, nt the band!!
i know it may be hard to learn bassoon in the beginning... but it seems like u didnt even try then u give up le... actually.. i hate bassoon when i started learning it... it's like v hard to get it in tune la... then fingerings also all over the place... but xue li motivate mi la... then i prac so hard until gt results come out... xue li is v concern about how u progress... how can u disappoint her?! last time still gt yi fang jia hao to teach u la... so many ppl guan xin ni... prac hard can?? xiang yun is also v stress la... she dunno wad to do with u le la...
mr tan say give u 1 month... can make it de... u gt some of the basic le... come back everyday to prac... wkend borrow instrument back to prac... in less than one month, u can play a simple piece liao... bassoon is lower woodwind... the parts is nt like flute n clarinet... gt lots of semiquavers de la... or even demi semi quavers...
if u dun mind ah... i can prac with u everyday de ^^
